Friday Night Lights "Who Do You Think You Are"

On this episode, the Taylor's are finding it hard to leave Gracie at Daycare. Tami goes to drop her off and can't do it, and she brings Gracie to school with her. Carlotta tells Saracen that she is going back to Guatemala because her family needs her, (The cheerleader girl he dumped a few weeks ago isn't looking so bad now.) One of Santiago's old friends shows up, just released from Juvi, looking for Santiago to hang out. Santiago tells him he has to go to school and football practice, but later decides to hang out with his old friends. Lyla starts working at a Christian radio station, and answering teen's questions on air with Chris, the host of the show. Coach Taylor finds Gracie in Tami's office and Glen is taking care of her. Noelle invites Smash and his family over for dinner, Noelle's parents ask Smash's momma point blank what she thinks of their kids interracial relationship and says they are not comfortable with it. Smash's momma agrees that she doesn't think its appropriate, leaving the kids astonished. (Yet, it looks like Noelle's mom is Hispanic and her dad is white = interracial. So White/Hispanic is ok in Dillon but not Black/White?) Buddy Garrity meets some of Santiago's old friends, and invites them over for pizza? They didn't really look like the pizza and movie crowd. But Buddy says he is trying not to judge people by whats on the outside. Saracen tells Landry that he and Carlotta have been sleeping together and he is upset she is going to be leaving. Riggans makes a prank call to Lyla's radio show and she doesn't appreciate the joke. Lyla and Chris seem to be getting closer, when they are off air. Buddy Garrity shows up at the Taylor's with a box of his valuables, because he is not sure if he should trust Santiago's friends, but he decides to leave the stuff in the house so Santiago knows he trusts him. Carlotta invites Saracen to a birthday party, and he tells her he doesn't want her to leave, and that he loves her. Smash is still mad at his momma for what happened at Noelle's house. Smash and his sister go to see a movie at a far away movie theater, and Noelle joins them. One of the white movie goers whispers some racial insults at Smash, Noelle and Smash's sister. Smash tells him to quiet down, then hits the kid and He and Noelle and his sister leave. Smash's sister is upset about what happened but covers for Smash the next morning at breakfast. Santiago's buddies throw a big party at Buddy's and Santiago is worried they may break or steal something. When the party is over Santiago notices Buddy's gold watch is missing, he goes over to his friend Davon's house and demands the watch. Devon and Santiago start fighting and then you see Santiago go home all beat up and give the watch back to Buddy.
Riggans shows up at the radio station with some flowers for Lyla, Riggans has really become a good guy, saving Julie a few weeks back, now this. When Riggans finds Lyla, he sees her kissing Chris and he drops the flowers and leaves, poor Riggans. Saracen gets home and Carlotta is gone, she had to leave a day early but left a note for Saracen. The Taylor's are finally able to leave Gracie at daycare.
Next week: Tami coaches volleyball, Riggans tells Lyla he loves her, Smash deals with the consequences of his altercation and Street gets a new job.

NFL Conference Championship Results 1-1

I was 1-1 this week, missing the Packers/Giants game (As a Giants fan, I don't mind missing this one) My playoff record is now 8-2. Here are the results;

1. San Diego vs. New England
PICK: Patriots RESULT: Patriots 21-12
The Patriots increased their record to 18-0, but is wasn't easy as the Patriots offense was not as powerful as usual. After a near perfect game against the Jags, QB Tom Brady struggled throwing 3 INTs, perhaps due to his mysterious foot injury. RBs Lawrence Maroney and Kevin Faulk powered the offense while the Patriots D continued to play their bend but not break style. Many teams have moved the ball up and down the field on the Patriots but have been forced to settle for FGs when they can't score TDs (the Chargers kicked 4.) As stated here numerous times, to beat the Patriots, a team needs to score TDs, because that's what they are doing on offense. The Chargers lost L.T. after the first series, but QB Phillip Rivers was able to play the entire game with a brace to protect his torn ACL, a very courageous effort, even in defeat.

2. NY Giants vs. Green Bay
PICK: Packers RESULT: NY Giants 23-20 (OT)
-2 degrees with a windchill of -20 something. And judging by the face CB Charles Woodson gave after RB Brandon Jacobs ran him over on the Giants first play, tackling was not fun in the cold. The Giants did everything they could down the stretch to give the Packers a chance to grab the win; 2 missed FGs, an INT that was fumbled back to the Packers, and a punt return fumbled, kicked back 15 yds, but recovered by the Giants and then a penalty that negated a Bradshaw TD run. WR Plaxico Burress looked healthy despite his torn ankle ligament and had a monster day and battle with Pro Bowl CB Al Harris. Eli Manning played another good game, his confidence has really improved with the Giants' playoff run. Next up, a rematch with the Patriots.

NFL Conference Championship Picks

So far, in the playoffs I'm 7-1, losing last week's Colts/Chargers game. Here are this week's picks;

1. San Diego vs. New England (Sun. 3pm)
Weather forecast calls for temperatures in the teens. The Chargers come into this matchup banged up, but sporting 8 straight wins, which pales in comparison to the Patriots, as I mentioned last week, the Patriots are undefeated at home in the playoffs, and obviously the regular season. The Chargers pulled an upset last week beating the Colts without L.T. , a limited injured Antonio Gates and the early departure of Rivers (rumored to have a partially torn ACL.) I can't see the Chargers flying cross country, to play a perfect game in freezing conditions, the Patriots just have too much offense and I don't think the Chargers can keep up, especially if Billy Volek is forced into action. PICK: Patriots

2. NY Giants vs. Green Bay (Sun. 6:30)
Weather forecast calls for temps between 5 above and 5 below at night, BRRRR! I don't care what the players say it hurts to catch the ball, tackle and get hit when its that cold. The Giants have become the Big Blue Road Warriors winning 9 straight road games including 2 playoff games. The Giants secondary has been injured, but played well the past few weeks, but the Packers passing game may be too strong for the Giants if the pass rush can't disrupt Favre. The Giants will need to establish their running game and avoid having Eli challenge the Packers superb secondary with Al Harris, Charles Woodson and knockout specialist Atari Bigby. Both teams can run, but the Packers have the better passing game and as mentioned last week its tough to beat Green Bay at Lambeau in January. I also saw a stat this week that said only two other NFC teams had won 2 road playoff games to get to the NFC title game and both lost. Although in the AFC the Steelers won the SuperBowl in this fashion a few years ago. PICK: Packers

Superbowl
Packers and Patriots

Friday Night Lights "Jumping The Gun"

On this episode, the Larabee football team displaced by a tornado is set to play Dillon under lights, Friday. Verbal commitment day is approaching and Smash and Noelle are sifting through all his offers, as he is pressured to choose. Coach Taylor apologizes to Julie for letting Riggans stay at the house, and finds Riggans sleeping in the locker room and tells him he can't stay there either. Smash's mom takes his phone and tells him he needs to refocus on school. Tami's sister Shelley finds out she passed her real estate exam. Riggans returns home to the house he shares with his brother, Billy who has lost his job and needs 2 grand or the bank is taking the house next week. Billy apologizes to Riggans. Smash's mom is harassed by a recruiter at the grocery store, before Tami steps in and asks the man to leave. Tami asks Coach Taylor to speak to Smash about the recruiting process. Taylor asks Smash if he has considered everything, and points out players that would be ahead of him at some of the schools recruiting him. Julie apologizes to Riggans for him getting kicked out of the house. Larabee QB1, Chip tells Smash he is going to TMU, and asks if they are going to be teammates? Smash says Alabama is calling him, everyone will just have to wait and see. Tami and Coach Taylor are getting perturbed with Shelley, and later after Shelley tapes over Coach Taylor's game tape he tells Shelley he thinks its time to leave, and takes heat from Tami for it, after she sees Shelley leaving to go to a hotel. Coach Taylor returns the Larabee playbook to Coach Dickey that he left on the practice field, and the Dickey tells Taylor he is a regular boy scout. Jackie, the woman who hooked up with Riggans last season and his brother Billy this season, is seen packing her stuff to move. Riggans and Billy go over to Guy's place to get Riggans' stuff, Guy isn't there, Riggans knocks Guy's gun off the banister of the stairs (doesn't everyone keep their gun there?) When Riggans goes to pick it up he sees a stack of money taped under the coffee table and they take it to pay their mortgage. Julie confesses to Coach Taylor, as he is leaving the house for the game, that Riggans was helping her the other night and wasn't trying to take advantage of her. The game is a back and fourth shootout, that sees Dillon trailing by 5 late (The Panthers sure do play a lot of close games). On 4th down, Dillon is going for it and calls for a bootleg play. Saracen rolls out and dumps the ball to Riggans, as Saracen is getting hit, Riggans is running down the field with no Larabee players in sight, when Larabee Coach Dickey runs out on the field and tackles Riggans. The referee calls coach interference, and says the game is over. It is never stated what the result of the play is, I assume that Dillon was awarded the TD and the win. In the locker room, Coach Taylor asks Coach Dickey what his problem is, and Dickey apologizes and says that his wife only has 3 months to live. Tami and Shelley meet for coffee and Shelley tells her that she is going to be moving to Dallas to pursue her real estate career. Coach Taylor goes over to Riggans' house to apologize for kicking him out of his house. Smash and the team are eating at the diner and a TMU recruiter offers him a scholarship and asks for a verbal. Smash tells the diner he is going to TMU, and then goes home to give his mom some flowers and tell her the good news.

Next Week: The Taylor's find it hard to leave Gracie at day care and Riggans is too late in an attempt to win Lyla's affection.

NFL Divisional Results 3-1

I was 4-0 last week and 3-1 this week, I didn't think the Indy/SD game would be the game I got wrong, but 7-1 for the playoffs isn't too shabby. I'm beating all the Fox and CBS guys who picked the Bucs last week and Indy and Dallas this week.

Seattle vs. Green Bay (Sat.)
PICK:Packers RESULT: Packers 42-20 The snow played a major factor throughout the game, by the fourth quarter the snow was falling so hard that WR's had a hard time seeing the ball. Packers RB Ryan Grant had 2 fumbles in the first quarter, and 200 yards and 3 TDs later he had more than made up for his mistakes, that had allowed the Seahawks to get up 14-0. The Packers came to play, SS Atari Bigby and LB Nick Barnett were sticking the Seahawks. And honestly how can Seattle RB Shaun Alexander cash his paycheck with a straight face, he is absolutely robbing the Seahawks the way he runs.

Jacksonville vs. New England (Sat.)
PICK: Patriots RESULT: Patriots 31-20 A lot closer than the Pats would have liked. Tom Brady had to be nearly perfect, completing 26 out of 28 passes for 262 yds and 3 TDs to help the Pats secure the win. The Jags fooled everyone by coming out throwing instead, of relying on the run and had great success through the air. The Patriots made the necessary adjustments at halftime and controlled the game in the 2nd half. The Patriots are now 17-0.

San Diego vs. Indianapolis (Sun.)
PICK: Colts RESULT: Chargers 28-24 Wow, the Chargers played most of this game without L.T., a banged up TE Antonio Gates and they lost Phillip Rivers to a knee injury in the 3rd quarter, although he was healthy enough to taunt the Indy crowd after the game. Didn't it use to be that you had to be good or at least playing to taunt? Super subs Michael Turner and Billy Volek did enough to keep the Chargers in the game. The Chargers medical staff will try to earn their money this week and get a team to New England for the AFC title game next week.

NY Giants vs. Dallas (Sun.)
PICK: NY Giants RESULT: Giants 21-17 The Giants continue their road success upping their mark to 9-1. Good news/Bad news for Tony Romo, Bad news, he helped Dallas become the first NFC #1 seed to lose in the Divisional round since the NFL changed the playoff format in 1990. Good news, Tony and Jessica Simpson can spend all the time they want in Cabo, because he probably isn't very welcome in Big D right now. RB Marion Barber was a beast in the first half, but Big Blue was able to contain him in the second half. The Cowboys tried to exploit the Giants injury riddled secondary, but the Dallas WRs dropped a lot of passes. The Giants haven't been spectacular, but getting the W is all that matters. And talk about weather shock for the G-men 70's in Tampa, 50's in Dallas, 20's-30's in Green Bay?

Friday Night Lights "There Goes The Neighborhood"

The episode started off with Riggans living with the Taylor's and Tami's sister, Shelly flirting and drooling over him. There is a news report that a tornado warning is in effect for Dillon. Riggans and Julie go to the grocery store, Julie asks Riggans if he is going to the school's Fall formal, he says no, she says me neither. In ultra dramatic fashion, Riggans looks out the window and sees the tornado coming and covers up Julie as the tornado hits, knocking out all the windows in the grocery store.. As a result of the tornado, Larabee, a Dillon rival, had their school damaged and their students, particularly the football team will be attending classes and practicing at Dillon, 2 weeks before they play each other. I can't imagine this would ever happen in the real world, considering the overcrowded schools situation across the country, that 2 schools could completely merge, but I digress. Lyla's mom, Pam tells her that she his getting married to Kevin. The Dillon players watch as the Larabee players unload their stuff from their buses. Taylor tells the team they need to share their facilities and to be good hosts to the other school. Landry asks Tyra if she wants to go to the dance and she says she is going with someone else (Larabee QB1, Chip.) Buddy takes his kids to an arcade and Lyla, breaks the news about Pam's engagement, and he had no idea, Buddy gets the idea that he needs to go tell her that he loves her. Buddy goes to the house and bares his soul, Pam doesn't accept his apology. Larabee's coach is a bit of a jerk and has very little control/looks the other way as his team trashes the Panther locker room, disregards the practice field sharing schedule and causes trouble. When the Panthers retaliate, Taylor scolds them and makes them run the stairs as the Larabee coach finds nothing wrong with what his team did. Landry asks Julie, what he should do about him and Tyra, Julie seems surprised that there is anything between them. Tyra tells Julie that she likes Landry, but things are complicated between them. Tami yells at Shelly for drooling over Riggans, Tami tells Shelly she needs to act more like an adult. Julie and Riggans see Saracen and Carlotta kissing in his car, and Julie gets upset. Coach Taylor likes having Riggans at the house because it ups the man ratio. Landry sees Tyra talking to Chip and gets into a fight that leads into a team vs. team brawl in the cafeteria, then a food fight. After the Larabee team urinates in the Panther's lockers, Riggans goes into the weight room to confront the Larabee team and their Coach pushes Riggans to the ground. Taylor rushes in and threatens the coach, saying he should never put his hands on one of his players or he will never coach again. At home, Riggans thanks Coach Taylor for helping out with the other coach. Landry shows up at the dance looking for Tyra, whom he finds sitting by herself. Landry asks her where Chip is, she says he is in the bathroom throwing up. Tyra tells Landry that she cares about him, but she needs time to figure things out. Landry tells her that it doesn't make sense to him and she is better than that. Riggans sees some guy, trying to make out with Julie at a party and threatens him, I think its more because he is looking out for her then trying to get with her. Riggans drives her home and carries her into the house because she is drunk and as he is putting her into bed, Coach Taylor sees Julie with her arms around Riggans and assumes the worst and kicks Riggans out of the house.

Next week: Coach Taylor makes things tough for Riggans and the Larabee coach attacks Riggans while he is running down the field.

NFL Divisional Picks

In the Wildcard round I was 4-0. I finished the regular season 41-19. Here are the picks for the Divisional round;

1. Seattle vs. Green Bay (Sat. 4:30)
Temperatures are expected to be in the 20's for this one. Green Bay comes in rested after the bye week and sporting a 7-1 record at Lambeau this season. With all the hoopla about the Patriots 16-0 season and talk of the Cowboys, Green Bay quietly had a spectacular season that saw the reemergence of QB Brett Favre, the development of his young WRs and the discovery of RB Ryan Grant. Seattle played one of their best games of the year last week in their Wildcard win over the Redskins. They played that game without #1 WR Deion Branch, who is expected back this week. However last week QB Matt Hasselbeck reaggravated his wrist injury as well as a thigh bruise, that could play a role this week. The Seahawks pass first mentality has been paying dividends, but the Packers have possibly the best CB duo in the league Charles Woodson and Al Harris. For those of you that read my blog regularly, you know of my man crush on Al Harris, who finally was recognized this season by Pro Bowl voters, and if you still don't know Harris, he was the guy who returned an INT for a TD in OT the last time these two teams met in the playoffs. Its tough to beat the Packers in Lambeau and its even tougher to beat them there in the playoffs. PICK:Packers

2. Jacksonville vs. New England (Sat. 8)
Temps in the 20's expected for Saturday night. Everyone knows the Patriots won all their games this year, they have won 12 straight at home and 9 straight playoff games at home. Yet, the media particularly, what we are force fed by the world wide leader, is practically telling us the Jags should win this game, Why is there so much Pats hating going on? I agree that Jacksonville is one of the hottest teams right now and their strength is the running game, which despite the Patriots being middle of the road defending the run, have been gashed in some games on the ground. Although, as we saw against the Steelers and the Colts the Patriots give up a lot of yards but they play tough D in the redzone, forcing teams to accept FGs, while they score TDs on offense. The Patriots are going to be focused on stopping the run and will challenge QB David Garrard to beat them through the air. The Jaguars secondary outside of Rashean Mathis is nothing special, and that doesn't get it done against Brady and Co. The Pats passing game will be too much for the Jags. Since the Pats are already lounging in Mercury Morris' backyard if they win out do they get the deed to his house? or maybe he just won't be allowed to talk anymore. PICK: Patriots

3. San Diego vs. Indianapolis (Sun. 1)
The Chargers beat the Colts in November, 23-21 in San Diego, they did almost blow a 23-0 lead but that game, was the game that turned around the Chargers season. The Chargers will live and die with L.T. due to the likely absence of TE Antonio Gates (foot). It looked like Tomlinson was going to cry this week, while addressing the media about how much Gates means to the offense. QB Phillip Rivers will have to rely on WRs Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson. The Colts swear that WR Marvin Harrison will return from the worst knee sprain in the history of injuries this week. Manning will also get back WR Anthony Gonzalez. The D is led by NFL Defensive POY SS Bob Sanders and his specialty in neutralizing the run, bummer for the Chargers. Playoff time is business time for the Colts, no trips to Mexico for Peyton last week, like Tony Romo. Colts over the Bolts, sets up the potential real SuperBowl Pats vs. Colts. PICK: Colts

4. NY Giants vs. Dallas (Sun. 4:30)
Temps in the 50's expected. The Giants continue their road tour, 8-1 this season, the only loss coming in Week 1 to Dallas. The Giants have been playing over their heads the past two weeks and will need to continue to do so if they want to pull the upset this week. It will be key for Eli Manning to carry over the confidence he gained last week and the Giants can't afford to start the game slowly with 3, 3 and outs like they did last week. It is tough to beat a team 3 times in one season and that's what Dallas must do to advance. The Cowboys come in having struggled down the stretch and with T.O. being doubtful (as of Thurs. he was limited in practice, under the injury reporting system that can mean he put his helmet on and tied his shoes and nothing else.) which dramatically changes the look of the offense if Owens can't play. Without Owens to draw double teams, TE Jason Witten won't see as much space in the middle of the field and WR Patrick Crayton will be expected to produce like a #1 WR. Which Romo will show up this week? the one that started the season on fire or the one who keeps looking up in the stands to see Jessica Simpson, instead of watching the pass rush. The Cowboys are clearly the better team, but without Owens intensity, I think the Cowboys are ripe for an upset. I'm going out on a limb and picking Big Blue. PICK: NY Giants

Check back later in the week for the results.

College Picks Roundup

For the 2007 College Football season I went 22-9 (71%) during the regular season. I decided to pick all 32 Bowl games and went 21-11 (66%). So all and all I finished 43-20 (68%) Not too bad.

NFL Wildcard Picks Results 4-0

In the Wildcard round I was 4-0. I finished the regular season 41-19, 6-1 on Thursday games, 2-1 on Saturday games, 26-15 on Sunday games and 7-2 on Monday games.

1. Washington vs. Seattle (Sat.)
PICK: Seahawks RESULT: Seahawks 35-14 The magic ran out for the Redskins, they took control of the game after a slow start by scoring 2 quick TDs to make the score 14-13, before the Seahawks defense took over scoring 2 TDs on INTs. The Seahawks passing game looked good without WR Deion Branch, who missed the game with a calf injury, the running game however is a different story, wasn't RB Shaun Alexander the MVP of the NFL a few years ago?

2. Jacksonville vs. Pittsburgh (Sat.)
PICK: Jaguars RESULT: Jaguars 31-29 This had to be the most exciting game of the weekend. The Jags jumped out to a big league before the Steelers came back and scored 3 TDs in the 4th quarter to take the lead. QB David Garrard led the Jags down the field for the game winning FG, and his 4th down QB sneak to put the Jags in FG range had to be the gutsiest play of the game. Congrats to the Jaguars, your prize, a Saturday night matchup with the Patriots.

3. NY Giants vs. Tampa Bay (Sun.)
PICK: NY Giants RESULT: Giants 24-14 The Giants continue their success on the road raising their record to 8-1 away from Giants Stadium. Eli Manning gets the monkey off his back by winning his first playoff game and most likely saving Tom Coughlin's job for next season. Who knew the G-men had a secondary, the big weakness of the D, all season stepped up and played a great game and will need to bring the same intensity next week against the rival Cowboys.

4. Tennessee vs. San Diego (Sun.)
PICK: Chargers RESULT: Chargers 17-6 The Titans did everything they could to contain L.T., neither team produced much offense. The Chargers offense was further stalled when they lost TE Antonio Gates in the 2nd quarter. In the 2nd half QB Phillip Rivers connected with WRs Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers for some big plays, including a TD to Jackson. L.T. was able to score the nail in the coffin TD on a 4th a goal dive that initially saw him stopped in mid air but a second effort saw Tomlinson stretch the ball across the goal line for the score.

NFL Wild Card Picks

I finished the regular season 41-19 for the season, 6-1 on Thursday games, 2-1 on Saturday games, 26-15 on Sunday games and 7-2 on Monday games. I will pick all the playoff games and here are the picks for the Wild Card round;

1. Washington vs. Seattle (Sat. 4:30)
The Redskins are one of the hottest teams coming into the playoffs but have a tough task to travel across country to play the Seahawks. Seattle comes in to the playoffs playing their worst football of the season losing to both the Panthers and Falcons down the stretch. Seattle always seems to appear better than they are with the aid of a weak division schedule, compared to a team like the Redskins who played in a division that produced 3 playoff teams. The keys for this matchup will be how much pressure the Seahawks can put on QB Todd Collins and for the Redskins how well RB Clinton Portis can run the ball. The Seahawks will have all of their receiving corp. healthy this week (Branch, Hackett, Engram and Burleson) and the passing game may be too much for the Skins secondary. PICK: Seahawks

2. Jacksonville vs. Pittsburgh (Sat. 8)
Jacksonville is poised to make some noise in the playoffs with the success of their running game and the nearly perfect season by QB David Garrard. The Jags did the unthinkable a few weeks ago by going into Pittsburgh and beating the Steelers, who were 7-1 at home this season. Without RB Willie Parker the Steelers are a lot more one dimensional and Big Ben has been banged up as of late, the Steelers haven't been the same since the loss to the Patriots.
PICK: Jaguars

3. NY Giants vs. Tampa Bay (Sun. 1)
Neither team has played well down the stretch, but the Giants do bring some momentum from their game with the Patriots last week. The Giants have been a dominant 7-1 on the road and will look to continue that success by relying on the running game, because you never know which Eli Manning will show up. The Bucs QB Jeff Garcia has been dealing with a back injury but the same Garcia beat the Giants, last year in the first round of the playoffs while with the Eagles and also when he was in San Fran in the "Trey Junkin" game. The Giants defense need to control this game. PICK: Giants

4. Tennessee vs. San Diego (Sun. 4:30)
The Chargers might as well have been given a bye, the Titans couldn't even compete with the Colts 2nd string last week. Kerry Collins came off the bench last week to spark minimal life into the Titans offense. L.T. and the Chargers should use this game like a scrimmage.
PICK: Chargers

Check back later in the week for results:
